2004 Doctoral Nursing Research Studentship winner
Suzanne Rapley, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner - Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough
Research Project: An investigation into neonatal skin care regiments in England and the effect of such practices on neonatal skin barrier function
Suzanne will research the effects of neonatal skin cleansing regimens on the infants skin barrier function.
All infants, especially those born prematurely, have vulnerable skin and Suzanne's research will study different skin cleansers and the effects such products have on the infants' skin barrier function.
She is undertaking her PhD at the University of Southampton and hopes the award will offer her, the Trust and Neonatal nursing, recognition at a national level as currently there is limited research on the skin of premature infants in the UK. Improving skin care practices to minimise damage has the potential to improve patient outcome, reduce long term skin problems in this patient group, and to enable rational, evidence based product choices to be made by healthcare professionals and parents alike.
