2001 Post-doctoral Nursing Research Fellowship winner
Dr Mandy Fader, Nurse Lecturer - University College, London
Research Project: Urinary Incontinence and Skin Health: An Investigation into the Effects of Absorbent and Topical Products on Skin Hydration and Pressure Distribution.
Mandy was awarded the first Smith & Nephew Post-doctoral Nursing Research Fellowship. Her research aims to study the impact of urinary incontinence on skin breakdown in older people. 'Wet' skin is known to be more vulnerable to skin damage than dry skin and this research will look at methods of minimising skin wetness. She will focus on different brands of pads and different types of barrier creams and evaluate their efficacy in maintaining dry skin. She will also examine the impact that different pads have on the pressure relieving properties of different pressure management products.
The results of this research are intended to enhance the nursing care of patients with urinary incontinence and risk of skin breakdown by leading to informed product choice.
