2007 Doctoral Nursing Research Studentship winner
Julie Santy, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Health & Social Care, University of Hull
Research Project: Development and validation of a clinical assessment and research tool for the identification and classification of infection in skeletal external fixator pin site wounds in adults
Julie, who trained as a nurse in London, has worked at the University of Hull for five years.
Her research will explore how health care staff and patients can recognise infection in their external fixator pin site wounds. Primarily used to treat fractures and limb deformities, external fixation involves the application, by an orthopaedic surgeon, of metal apparatus with pins or wires that penetrate the skin and then bone whilst attached to an external metal framework.
The Doctoral Nursing Research Scholarship will enable Julie to concentrate on her PhD research at the University of Hull for the next three years.
