Dr David Voegeli, Senior Nurse Lecturer - University of Southampton
Research Project: The relationship between skin hygiene practices and emollient therapy to the reduction of skin vulnerability.
David Voegeli, a senior lecturer in nursing at the University of Southampton, was awarded the second Smith & Nephew Foundation Post-doctoral Nursing Research Fellowship to explore and develop the evidence base for skin care practices.
The promotion of skin integrity remains one of the most common challenges facing nurses in every sphere of practice. However, the 'unglamorous' nature of this area of nursing has not generally inspired good quality research into the mechanisms that may contribute to skin breakdown, or the effects of the nursing interventions utilised. This has led to the situation where large gaps exist in the evidence base, and the perpetuation of ritualistic practice.
His programme of work seeks to address the balance, with the overall aim being to scientifically investigate, and develop, current nursing practices in the maintenance of skin integrity. David's other interests are moisture associated skin damage and tissue response to pressure loading.
