2008 Doctoral Nursing Research Studentship winner
Annie Law, Practitioner/Senior Lecturer, Cancer Services & Haematology Directorate, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Research Project: The Development and Validation of a Palmar-Plantar Erythema (PPE) Risk Assessment Tool
Annie has worked as a Practitioner/Senior Lecturer (education lead) for the Cancer Services and Haematology Directorate at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for the past 10 years, with the last 5 years spent in a joint position with De Montfort University delivering Cancer Care education across both pre and post registration programmes.
Her research will be identifying factors which contribute to the occurrence of palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE) caused by cytotoxic chemotherapy in patients with cancer and validate a risk assessment tool. PPE is a side effect of some chemotherapy agents used to treat cancer and can cause pain and discomfort to the hands and feet, which can affect the patient's ability to carry out normal day to day activities. If we can identify the patients who are most at risk of developing PPE we can help to minimise the severity of this side effect and improve quality of life.
The Doctoral Nursing Research Scholarship will enable Annie to concentrate on her PhD research at the De Montfort University.
