Our Work
The background to our work is the ever increasing cost of treatment of patients with skin vulnerability, tissue breakdown and wound healing problems. We believe that care of chronic wounds alone in the UK represents around 3% of total NHS expenditure and these costs are likely to rise as the population ages and the incidence of tissue damage increases. Pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous leg ulcers, are estimated to create a resource cost of between £2.3bn and £3.1bn per annum. At any one time there are around 200,000 patients in the UK with a chronic ulcer and new cases are expected at a rate of half a million each year. Other areas of skin vulnerability and the impact of incontinence, where the true costs are hidden, have yet to be examined.
We are therefore bringing together key researchers and organisations that share an interest in this agenda to develop and strengthen networks and partnerships. We believe a collaborative approach to the challenges will result in greater public awareness, higher health policy priority and increased research investment.
